21st prototype of the Mitsubishi J2M.
The Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (雷電, "Lightning Bolt", Allied reporting name "Jack") was a single-engined land-based fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service in World War II. Its maiden flight occurred on 20 March 1942 and the first aircraft reached units at the end of the year. However, its service was marred by issues with the overheating engine and the lack of an effective turbocharger. Its real combat debut was in mid-1944 but the high altitudes of US strategic bombing raids and the switch to night missions by the USAAF limited its effectiveness. Depending on the source, the number of Mitsubishi J2Ms built is given to be between 540 and 625.
This page lists all works that feature a variation of the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden.
