From September 1916 to April 1918, the stories of both Manfred von Richthofen and Roy Brown until their deadly encounter. Some truthful historic points among lot of anachronism and made-up situation if not false facts. Air combat filming is nevertheless of better interest.

Richthofen scored his first confirmed aerial victory on 17 September 1916. Pfalz D.III deliveries to operational units began in August 1917...

Fokker D.VII (Replica)[]
Replica built by Rousseau Aviation.
Von Richthofen (right) never piloted the Fokker D.VII which reached front line units only the month following his death. Major Oswald Boelke (left) was already dead since eighteen months !

Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 (replica)[]
The Slingsby T.56 is a Currie Wot modified into a Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a replica.
Six airframes used for the filming.
The first one seen is wearing the French roundel but Aéronautique Militaire (as French Air Force was then named) never used the R.A.F. S.E.5a. And all the pilot who felt under Manfred von Richthofen shots were from the Commonwealth.

On 15 September 1970, Charles Boddington, a veteran of both The Blue Max and Darling Lili, was killed at the controls of one of the two airframes used.

Another one (or the same ?) now in German colors (background near the Peter Masterson's neck). By the way, Peter Masterson is Major Oswald Boelke who died following air collision with Erwin Böhme, not von Richthofen as stated by the screenplay.

Replica built by Bitz Flugzeugbau in 1964 for The Blue Max.

... a radio command Fokker D. VII. Several others were seen exploding in flight.
A Fokker like rudder on a replica of what seem a Sopwith(?).
If flyable German fighter are colorful, they lack of personal insignia (like all the British fighters seen). On the ground, those targeted by strafing are more realistic...
... even if they can't hide some simplistic assembly.
(top right) This burning Fokker D. VII has no moving aileron!
